During Jesuit Social Services All Staff Day, 12 December 2009, journalist Martin Flanagan interviewed Father Pedro Walpole, SJ, in Australia. Father Walpole shared his experiences working with communities amidst conflict, poverty, and disasters. As Executive Director of Environmental Science for Social Change (ESSC), a Philippine-based Jesuit research organization, Father Walpole and his group continuously pursues the use of scientific information on the environment to bring about the social change needed. This is part two of a two-part interview with Fr Pedro Walpole SJ by journalist Martin Flanagan Click here. In this interview, he looks at Australia's response to the bushfires, and argues for a change in the way communities relate to the environment.
Fr Walpole is the founder of Environmental Science for Social Change (ESSC),a Jesuit group in the Philippines using scientific data on the environment to advocate for changes aimed at making poor communities less susceptible to natural disaster. This interview was recorded at the Jesuit Social Services All Staff Day, 12 December 2009 in Melbourne, Australia.
