PulangiESSC's application for support from Planet Action last November 2010 was recently accepted and will allow access to free imagery and good digital elevation models for the entire Pulangi Basin in Mindanao.

This will provide critical updated information for the ongoing project work in Upper Pulangi with Belgian and Mindanao universities .

Planet Action is a non-profit initiative launched in June 2007 with the belief that technology must be part of the solution in addressing the threats posed by man-made climate change and in challenging societies and communities to be fully involved with new and cooperative approaches.

Earth imagery has a very powerful effect in understanding what is currently happening and at what pace. The earth observatory industry is among the few that can help and address this issue due to its extensive observation means, its huge image archives, its experience in analyzing and understanding earth images and its massive networks of scientists, scholars, teachers and researchers.

Planet Action supports projects related to climate change issues by providing geographic information, earth observation images and expertise to organizations (including NGOs), institutions and universities working towards combating climate change with local organizations.

Planet Action helps research in fighting and mitigating climate change by sharing its knowledge in analyzing and understanding earth images as well as donating remote sensing data from different satellites such as the SPOT constellation, Formosat2, Komsat2, Quickbird and different GIS and image processing tools to help scientists and local communities to extract and interpret the data.

The use of satellite imagery and GIS technologies allows environmental scientists and local communities to measure the speed at which glaciers recede, ice caps melt, lakes or forests decline.

Spot Image launched Planet Action and is joined by ESRI as co-founder. Its other partners include ITT Corporation, Trimble, National Space Organization, Digital Globe, the Centre for Remote Imaging Sensing and Processing, UNESCO, the European Space Agency, the International Independent Institute for Space & Satellite Solutions, and CartONG.
