ESSC has helped analyse various aspects of the emerging alliances to assist them in establishing themselves. Emerging alliance groups are filling the vacuum left by central government in tackling the decline of the upland forests and marine ecosystem.
The alliances are tackling such varied issues as the loss of agricultural land in the Alah valley, illegal fishing in Surigao and the supply of drinking water in Bukidnon.
ESSC's approach with the alliances has been:
- Clarifying their current situation
- Establishing with them what they want to achieve
- To review the strategy and financial viability to achieve their goals.
Subsequently ESSC is working closely with many of these newly formed alliances. In the Allah valley ESSC has engaged with both the community (barangay) and the local government to discuss the access to non-timber resources, a sustainable water supply and the provision of basic facilities such as health and education.
Where barangays dont have the resources to resolve these issues themselves. ESSC tries to identify other baragays within the region with similar issues to draw them together to address common problems. The formation of such an alliance helps formulate proprosed solutions that can be addressed by local government.
Given that alliances have only emerged within the last five years it still too early to see what will be achieved, but it is evident that people are working together to tackle environmental issues.
