Philippine-Belgium cooperation marks a continuing process of exploration and exchange in research and institutional collaboration. For the ESSC and Facultés Universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix (FUNDP)/ Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) partnership, putting the Philippines on a global map takes on new level of dynamism, new patterns of relationships and ultimately, knowledge building.A significant contribution of this exchange is building people's capacities to collectively manage and plan towards an improvement of their way of life through a more responsive management of the environment. By promoting and sustaining the applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Remote Sensing (RS) technologies in community-based natural resource management, development planning and policy, trade, investment and international development assistance, decision-maling are enhanced. In the Philippines, particularly in Mindanao, the ESSC-FUNDP/UCL partnership highlights the solid research foundation in the use of geomatic tools to facilitate greater understanding of the impact of human activities on the environment.

Even with issues and concerns surrounding GIS and RS in the Philippines, potentials and challenges of these technologies are acknoledge in formulating national standards, improvement on FUNDP statistical classification algorithms in the context of tropical forests, GIS integration in barangay development planning, and mobilizing people from universities to increase GIS awareness and increase their appreciation of community derived data.
